How to install a WordPress Plugin

Installing plugins on to your WordPress is a quick and easy way to add extra functionality. There are a number of different ways to carry out the installation. Here's a few of our favourites.

How to install a WordPress Plugin using the Automatic installer

  1. Login to your WordPress Website
  2. Look down the left hand side and select Plugins->Add New
  3. In the search box type in the name of the plugin or some keywords
  4. Find the plugin you want to install
  5. Click install
  6. Wait
  7. Click activate
  8. You're done

How to install a WordPress Plugin Manually

This way is useful if you've downloaded a plugin to your computer from somewhere, like here.

  1. Login to your WordPress website
  2. Look down the left hand side and select Plugins->Add New
  3. Select upload from the links across the top
  4. Browse to your Zip file (make sure it's the right one, some plugins have a Zip inside a Zip)
  5. Select it
  6. Click install now
  7. Wait
  8. Click activate
  9. You're done

How to install a WordPress Plugin using FTP

  1. First you'll need to extract your plugins Zip file so you end up with a folder full of the plugins files.
  2. Connect to your website via FTP
  3. Browse to /wp-content/plugins/
  4. Upload the plugin folder you extracted
  5. Login to your WordPress website
  6. Look down the left hand side and select Plugins->Installed Plugins
  7. Find the plugin you just uploaded
  8. Click activate
  9. You're done
